Prawns Curry in Sri Lankan Style

As you all know Sri Lanka is an island, we have lots of sea food dishes in our meals. Prawns are the most popular and also very special dish in occasions, parties and also in our day to day meals.
Even prawns are little bit expensive, most of Sri Lankans love to eat prawns as I know. We have so many ways to cook prawns, but prawns curry is the most popular way of cooking because we love to eat spicy food a lot. (If you don’t like to eat so much spicy, reduce the amount of chili powder.)
Try the recipe by your self too. I hope you also will love the dish as we all Sri Lankans do :-)
Good luck with the recipe.

INGREDIENTS:

200g tiger prawns
2 cups coconut milk
1 onion – sliced
3 cloves of garlic –sliced
½ of a lime - juice
1 x 1.5cm cinnamon piece
5 – 6 curry leaves
1 teaspoon Sri Lankan raw curry powder
1 ½ teaspoons Chili powder
¼ teaspoon turmeric
½ teaspoon toasted chili powder (optional)
5 – 6 tablespoons oil
Salt to taste

DIRECTIONS:
Place the onion, garlic, cinnamon, curry leaves, turmeric, chili powder, Sri Lankan raw curry powder, coconut milk & salt a medium size saucepan and mix it well. Then add the tiger prawns into the saucepan and keep it on medium high heat for nearly 15 minutes.
Then transfer the curry into another bowl and add the oil into the saucepan. When the oil is ready fry the each side of prawns for nearly 5 - 6 minutes. When the frying part is over add the toasted chili powder into the prawns and mix it well. Then add the curry into the prawns and let it be on low heat for nearly 5 - 10 minutes.
Add the lime juice, and give a quick stir.
Taste for salt.
(Stir the curry while you are cooking. If you don’t, the coconut milk will get curdle.)

SERVING:
You can have this prawns curry with any kind of rice, noodles, bread or anything.

NOTES:
If you don’t like to use the same saucepan for frying the prawns, you can use another one.

ENJOY!!!

  1. Chamri,
Thanks for the lovely tiger prawn curry but wish you n\didnot use your fingers to mix it as it is not hygenic and also wish your cooker was clean as it does not give a good impression of our lovely Sri lanka and the great clean Sri Lankans! Please be thoughtful next time please!

  2. this is a great recipe, love prawn curry.

to "anonymous" - my kitchen isn't spotless and neither are ANY of the kitchens I've seen in Sri Lanka... things are perfect in TV fantasy worlds... but not in the world of rice and curry in real Sri Lanka.

  3. I agree with Brett. Please keep going Chamri! You are doing a good job. And as far as anonymous is concerned, if you feel that this is good enough why don't you start a blog yourself?

  6. Hello Chamri,

Just wanted to let you know that I tried this recipe and it was delicious. It tasted just like how my grandmother used to make it. My mother passed away when I was very young and I was in a boarding school practically most of my life. I would visit my grandparents on vacations and my grandma was a great cook! most of your recipes are very similar to hers and remind me of good ol' times in SL. I really wish now that I would have spend more time learning to cook from her but thanks to you and the great videos you posted I am learning to be a better cook! I hope you ignore the rude comments some have posted here and keep posting recipes for us to try. There are always going to be negative, bitter people around, but don't pay them any mind.

  7. Thank you everyone for positive & negative comments. Also for pointing out my mistakes :-).

Thanks Piumika for your long comment. My mother was also passed away when I was 16. I learned cooking specially from my father, Kusuma the lady who took care of us after my mothers death and also from my mother in law. still I´m learning from them. I also learned from my mother too. Making Kaha Bath (Yellow Rice) is something I learned from her. I´ll do my best to share what I know about cooking with you. Hope you all will enjoy my recipes.

  12. Hey Couz,
Just wanted to ADD IN to the comments mentioned above.lol!
Always remember, in any thing you do, there are always the ones who would like to learn a thing or two from you, improving themselves, benifiting from your knowledge of the subject and appreciating the goodness and essence of what's been taught and they are the same ones who would continue to encourage you, guide you and want you to achieve your dreams and goals, no matter what errors or mistakes you do.
Constructive criticism is a good thing, for one's improvement.
But i should say to the so called 'Perfect ones', that when giving a piece of advise or a comment to someone who happens to share something useful and knowledgeable, should comment in a decent way.

Cos after all, i bet you had no clue, of how to cook even a simple meal and that's why you logged into this site, for guidance.
SO DON'T BE A JACK ASS and comment harshly, when you basically can comprehend what's been said in the videos and recipes. IF not get a translator, or find another site.
    P.S- NOBODY'S PERFECT!

So couz, sorry for the long comment, but someone ought to show these bad mouths, how to shut it when it's out of limit.
KEEP DOIN WHAT YOUR DOING. YOU HAVE A GREAT TALENT. SO KEEP ROLLING, GAL:)
    T.C. cHEERS!

  16. Hey Chamari!!!!
Love your recipes. As for using your hands I believe there is nothing unhygenic about it as long as you wash your hands. this is where the famous sri lankan "ath gune" that makes all the difference. thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us. Please keep it going.

  18. Hi, thanks for posting the video and the recipe. However, when you go public it is always good to get second opinion on how people would feel about it before posting (video as well as English in your website). I too wished that you used a cleaner stove and a different pan. We Sri Lankans "are" cleaner and artfully advanced people where presentation had always mattered in a meaningful way. It would have been nicer if you used a clay pot. I don't know why most of the Sri Lankans who commented here were so upset about constructive criticism. Chamri, I hope you take these comment and improve. Good luck!

  19. Hi, i wrote the post above and felt that I should write again. I tried your recipe and "It was wonderful"!!! Thank you very much. Frying the shrimp after the curry was something new I learned from you and it was delicious. Please keep up the good work and post more great dishes.

    All the best!

  20. Hi there, just got back from a short holiday in Sri Lanka and am craving the food, so great to find this site. Thank you. And I certainly wouldn't worry about the strange 'hand' comment. First rule of cooking ... wash your hands ... then use them! Surely, one of the wonders of cooking is in using all of the five senses?

  31. Will try this on Sunday when my parents come over for lunch. (Btw, thought the marks on your cooker were as a result of too much cleaning. And as for not using your fingers, well, clearly Anon doesn't watch today's cookery programmes.) Keep up the good work, Chamari. You are a life saver to poor cooks like myself :D.
